Ivermectin: Getting the Dosage Right

When it comes to medication, the active ingredient is only part of the story: just as important is the dose, the formulation, and how consistently your body absorbs it.
With the growing popularity of ivermectin, many people have erroneously turned to veterinary products because they’re easier to obtain or appear to be a less expensive alternative. While veterinary ivermectin contains the same active ingredient, it is not equivalent to a human medication, and in this blog post we aim to show you why.
A percentage isn’t the same as a dose
One of the most common veterinary formulations is an oral paste containing 1.87% ivermectin. At first glance, that may seem straightforward, but a percentage simply tells you the concentration of the medication, not how much you should take.
A human ivermectin tablet, on the other hand, contains a precise amount, such as the 12 mg tablet we carry for sale. Every tablet delivers exactly the same dose.
A 1.87% veterinary paste contains approximately 18.7 mg of ivermectin per gram of paste. To receive the equivalent of one 12 mg tablet, you would need to accurately measure about 0.64 grams of paste. That may sound simple, but it’s surprisingly difficult in practice, and when you are dealing with a health crisis, it’s imperative to know what you’re up against.
Veterinary syringes are designed to dose animals weighing hundreds of kilograms, not people. The markings are based on animal body weight rather than milligrams of medication. Even a small measuring error can result in taking a mistakenly erroneous amount.
Medications are much more than their active ingredient
Another misconception is that if the active ingredient is identical, the product must be identical. In reality, ivermectin makes up only 1.87% of a typical veterinary paste, while the remaining 98.13% consists of inactive ingredients, known as excipients. These ingredients give the product its consistency, stability, flavour, shelf life, and delivery characteristics. Human medications also contain excipients, but they’re carefully selected and specifically tested for human use to ensure the medication dissolves predictably, is absorbed consistently, and remains stable throughout its shelf life.
Veterinary formulations are developed for the intended animal species: their excipients are chosen to meet veterinary manufacturing requirements and have not been formulated or evaluated as human oral medications.
Every medication undergoes extensive testing before approval.
For human medicines, we study how quickly the medication dissolves, how efficiently it is absorbed, how it moves through the body, and what blood concentrations are achieved after each dose. This process, known as pharmacokinetic testing, helps ensure that every tablet performs consistently.
Veterinary medicines undergo similar testing, but only in the animal species for which they were designed: For example, although horses have a single stomach like humans, their digestive tract, feeding behaviour (and diet), intestinal physiology, and overall gastrointestinal transit differ considerably.

These physiological differences influence how veterinary products are formulated and administered. A product designed to perform predictably in a horse or cow has not been tested to provide the same predictable performance in humans.
Accuracy matters
When medications are dosed in milligrams rather than estimated from a veterinary syringe or paste, we can calculate the appropriate amount based on your body weight, treatment goals, and medical history. That level of precision simply isn’t possible when estimating fractions of a veterinary paste.
Human medications aren’t simply veterinary medications packaged differently – they’re formulated, manufactured, and tested specifically for human physiology, with carefully controlled dosing and quality standards designed to deliver safe and predictable results.
